You may have heard about the government’s proposed ban on the sale of “wet wood” wood for home fires and stoves, in order to improve air quality. This has been under discussion for a while and in February 2020 the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, confirmed that sales of wet wood will be phased out from 2021, as part of the government’s Clean Air Strategy which considers air pollution to be the top environmental risk to human health in the UK.

Wet wood produces more smoke when burned, and has over double the emissions of seasoned or kiln dried firewood. A lot of people don’t realise it, but if you have a stove or wood burner, you should be aware that by buying “cheap” logs you are adding to pollution levels, particularly in your own home and immediate vicinity. No-one really wants to do that, do they?

Under the new rules, sales of cheap logs which have not been fully dried will be phased out. These logs are often sold in netting from petrol stations, DIY stores etc and may be from recently felled timber which has not been dried out properly. Only logs which have less than 20% moisture in them (as Cottage Firewood logs do) will be available for sale.

Here’s some more information and summary of the changes taking place, starting in February 2021.

Our firewood logs have less than 20% moisture content

We have been selling highest quality, seasoned firewood for over 20 years. Our logs are locally sourced, seasoned and dried out for at least 3 years. In addition to meeting the anti-pollution criteria, we know that our seasoned logs burn better and offer better value for money – that’s why our customers come back to us time and time again.
